TOP 3 TRICKS I USE TO EXPAND MY SMALL CLOSET SPACE INSTANTLY

For every minute spent organizing, an hour is earned.

As we approach the cold season it is a usual occurrence that we will be purchasing and adding winter clothing into our closets or pull out sweaters, coats, knits and capes back up from previous winters.

One thing for sure is that at times we often run out of space to fit it all in even with our organised selves. Having a small size closet can be challenging and sometimes frustrating too.

If, like myself, you struggle with not having enough space in your closet to fit in all your clothes especially winter clothing, as it tends to require more closet space due to the bulky nature of winter wear such as coats, knitwear and everything else inbetween, it can be quite challenging while trying to keep your closet neat and well organised at the same time.

I approach this challenge in these 3 easy and fantastic ways that help me ease up a little more closet space and stay organised.

1. Declutter: Remove everything that’s not clothing out of your closet.

When I suggested this tip to one of my fantastic clients who had a consultation with me, committed to taking care of her wardrobe, seeking her new style and solving the issue of having a small sized closet, this is what she had to say…

Decluttering will always be an option fit for most people but to declutter does not always mean throw things away. It could also be to remove some things away and find or create separate storage for them. For example, there are people who keep their shoes, luggage (travel bags) and blankets inside their already small closet.

Imagine the closet space these would free up if they were just removed and stored elsewhere.

2. Flat ironing your clothes before storing them away in the closet.

I was taught this trick by one of my older sisters when I was still much young and I have never let go of this lesson. Not only does it help with closet space maximization but also, it helps you save time from having to start and go through the process of flat ironing what you’re about put on just before you head out for work. This tip saves you time, saves you closet space and keeps your closet looking organised and effortlessly neat.

3. Invest in a separate storage solution.

Opting for a dresser [aka chest of drawers]. What I like about this storage solution is the multifunctionality of it, where you can use each drawer to organise different clothing types and still dedicate one of the drawers [usually the uppermost for storing your accessories there, for easy access].

Even better is that dressers, like everything else have also changed in design and gotten more modern and elegant if that is what fits your sense of style or personality.

Whether you are purchasing a brand new one from a furniture store, shopping around for it in vintage furniture outlets or having one custom-made for you, go for colours such as white, different hues of blue, pink etc. as this will give your room the illusion of space while making it look well organised with a tint of elegance.

Cherry on top with this one is that you can use the top of your dresser (let’s call it the counter top) as space to decorate your dresser with either a special and unique decorative tray that you can play around with by placing a vas with your favourite flowers or stack up 2 to 3 books and anything else you like on and around them inside the tray. You can go on and add an oval or round mirror as well for a bit of feng shui.
